As diplomacy around the world continues to decline, various nations remain searching for solutions. In fact, the root of the issue usually lies within these nations. Moreover, dictatorships such as North Korea continue to thrive. For those unaware, North Korea epitomizes a nation that has wreaked havoc on its own people. Aside from famine, torture and imprisonment, several horrendous acts have taken place in North Korea.
Recently, the country gained international news coverage due to its nuclear program. Also, the country’s nuclear program remains a top concern to nations such as South Korea and the U.S. In fact, many insiders believe that the U.S. may go to war with North Korea. With that being said, nations such as the U.S. continue to contradict their own core values.
Furthermore, the nation prides itself on a belief that all men remain equal. However, recent events point to the contrary. Moreover, America continues to deal with a race problem. For those unaware, race has always remained an issue in the United States. Since the country’s conception, skin color has always served as a determining factor in reference to who will get the most opportunities.
Historically speaking, those with lighter skin received the amenities offered by the United States. In parallel, darker skinned people remained the burden bearers of this nation’s society. In many ways, darker skinned people continue to remain disenfranchised by mainstream America. Recently, countless racists have focused their efforts on Latino immigrants and migrant workers.
Furthermore, this sentiment has reached all areas of society. With that being said, the United States is considering the possibility of building a border near Mexico. In spite of the resurgence of racism in America, numerous Americans remain committed to ensuring equal rights for all Americans. A perfect example includes Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin. To expound further, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin both founded the Phoenix New Times and Village Voice Media.
Recently, both men received nationwide coverage regarding their illegal arrest in Maricopa County by Sheriff Joe Arpaio. For those unaware, both men remained illegally detained in the middle of the night from their homes. This remains attributed to the revelation of grand jury findings that wanted reporters’ notes on articles regarding Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
To make matters worse, the grand jury subpoenas attempted to single out citizens who read New Times stories online involving Sheriff Joe Arpaio. With that being said, their story remains remarkable due to the violation of their constitutional rights. As a result, these men sued Maricopa County.
Fortunately, they won their case. This remains attributed to them taking their case to the United States Court of Appeals for the ninth circuit. After winning their case, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin received almost $4 million dollars.
In spite of receiving such a large amount of money, they decided to give the money to several non-profit organizations with similar interests. In closing, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin have played a pivotal role in the fight for equal rights for migrant workers.
